John McGlashan College recorded an historic 17-15 victory against Otago Boys’ High School in the Otago final of the National First XV Championship.
John McGlashan prop Reon Lowery scored the opening try 18 minutes in to the game which was converted by Ryan Neill. After a successful penalty kick from Ryan, John McGlashan 1st XV headed into the break with a 10-0 lead.
Early in the second half, John McGlashan extended their lead to 17-0 when first five-eighth Luke Jarvie ran 80m to score (again converted by Ryan Neill). Otago Boys then closed the gap with two tries before scoring again in injury time. However, fullback Burns Mills missed the conversion, handing McGlashan a historic win against the OBHS First XV.
This was a great victory for the John McGlashan 1st XV and although McGlashan was forced to defend a lot in the 2nd half, the team showed a lot of passion and some tremendous defence.
McGlashan will now head to Invercargill on August 20th to play Southland Boys’ High School in the Highlanders area final.
